Anthony Minghella-54, Passed Away
Hollywood is in mourning because one of its gifted sons has passed away.
Anthony Minghella’s inopportune demise spread words of sorrow from Hollywood’s A-list.
The Academy award winning director died from a critical hemorrhage following a scheduled procedure on a neck growth at a London hospital, publicist announced. He was only 54.
“I’m devastated, there is really no way to put it into words,” Nicole Kidman advised issued through her rep. “He was a gift to the world.”
The Aussie star teamed up with Minghella on 2003’s Cold Mountain, for which he was granted Golden Globe nod for Best Director and Best Screenplay and she a Best actress Golden Globe nomination.
Kevin Spacey had equally touching words to share about the highly praised director.
“He was one of the greats, and anybody who loves storytelling will realize that he had much more to do,” Spacey said. “It’s an incredibly sad moment…He was a great man and a great friend.”
Gwyneth Paltrow, whom Minghella directed in The Talented Mr. Ripley, also shared her grief.
“He was a wonderful man, he was incredibly talented, and so invested in art and making the world better through art,” she said. “I feel really sad for his son Max and his wife, I feel very, very sad for them right now.”
Jude Law, who paired up with Minghella on three motion pictures —The Talented Mr. Ripley, Cold Mountain (equally produced an Oscar nod for the actor) and Breaking and Entering—hailed the director as “sweet, warm bright and funny man,” whom he would miss “hugely.”
“I am deeply shocked and saddened to hear of Anthony’s untimely death,” Law said in a statement issued by his publicist. “I worked with him on three films, more than with any other director, but had come to value him more as a friend than as a colleague.â€
“He was a brilliantly talented writer and director who wrote dialogue that was a joy to speak and then put it onto the screen in a way that always looked effortless. He made work feel like fun.”
