Winehouse and West Leads the Nods List at the Grammys
The much awaited 50th Grammy Awards, music industry’s Academy awards equivalent will kick off in Los Angeles Sunday with much talked about tabloid darling British soul singer Amy Winehouse and rapper Kanye West anticipated to lead the event.
Amy Winehouse, who will be conducting her participation at the ceremony via satellite from London, has six award nods in top categories including record, album and song of the year, best new artist, best pop vocal album and best female pop vocalist.
The only person ahead of her is rapper Kanye West, with eight award nominations, counting the coveted album of the year prize for his Graduation.
Recently admitted to a drug rehabilitation clinic in Britain last month, Amy Winehouse was originally refused a US visa to travel to Los Angeles to perform at the show. She was only granted an entry by the US authorities on Friday.
As a result of which, became too late for the 24-year-old singer to make the journey to California, according to Winehouse’s publicist.
“Unfortunately, due to the logistics involved and timing complications, Amy will not be coming to the US this weekend to perform at the Grammys,” Tracey Miller announced in a statement.
The British singer said she was still “raring to go and really excited to be performing at my first Grammy Awards,” although through a via satellite link.
US officials did not give details regarding their original pronouncement to snub Winehouse’s visa request, but her drug record was assumed to be the basis.
Winehouse has been the darling of tabloid headlines lately succeeding a reported drug OD, a sequence of canceled concerts and chaotic private life.
She received her award nods equally for her hit single Rehab and the album Back to Black and was the lone performer to earn nominations in the four top categories open to all-comers — record, song and album of the year, and best new artist.
Winehouse and West’s contend for credits in the best album chance which also comprises rock band Foo Fighters for Echoes, Silence, Patience & Grace.
Additional rivals for record of the year stakes are Beyonce for Irreplaceable, Foo Fighters for The Pretender, Rihanna featuring Jay-Z for Umbrella and Justin Timberlake for What Goes Around … Comes Around.
Winehouse is up for a hard fight in the song of the year category from Carrie Underwood’s Before He Cheats, Plain White T’s for Hey There Delilah, Corinne Bailey Rae for Like a Star and Rihanna/Jay-Z for Umbrella.
In another place, a pick of artists gathered four nominations each, including veteran rocker Bruce Springsteen.
Even if Springsteen was overlooked in the top categories, he pulled up nominations including best rock album Magic and rock song Radio Nowhere. Artists receiving four nods included hip-hop star Akon and Rihanna.
Ex-Beatle Paul McCartney was included in the nominees’ list as well, with nods including best male pop vocal performance for Dance Tonight and best pop vocal album Memory Almost Full.
Performing at the stellar event are rock queen Tina Turner and Beyonce, who are expected to carry out a duet, blues-rock guitarist John Mayer, Kanye West, Foo Fighters, Herbie Hancock and blind opera singer Andrea Bocelli.
Music industry’s luminaries including Tony Bennett, Cher, Prince, Stevie Wonder, Quincy Jones and Ringo Starr will be featured to present awards.
